Getting out into the countryside and walking through open green spaces in good company, improves personal health and wellbeing.
There are a number of active walking groups across the country that encourage people from black and minority ethnic communities to enjoy walking in the UK countryside.
Walking Groups include: Peace Walk, Derby African Caribbean Womens Group, Peak District Mosaic, Peaks of Colour, Steppers UK, Black Trail Runners, Black Girls Hike UK C.I.C, Muslim Hikers, London Caribbean Trekkers and Walk4Health.
The Walk4Health walking group started life as ‘The 100 Black Men Walk for Health’ in 2004. One of the first UK based BAMER walking groups, ‘The 100 Black Men Walk for Health’ inspired the play “Black Men Walking” produced by Eclipse Theatre, read more in the Guardian Newspaper!
Walk Advice
- What to take to a Walk: Wear comfortable walking boots/walking shoes, a light wind/waterproof jacket, hat & gloves if its cold. You could also take along a bottle of water and a light snack in a small day backpack.
